Launch

November 27, 2007

Very quietly earlier this month I finalized and soft-released a new website (as previously teased) to serve as a launching pad for my opening push into commercial and advertising work. This week I'm excited to finally pull back the curtain and officially introduce to the world the all new JLPFL.com.

Starting with something very clean and small, I plan to build up from there and add new work and self-directed projects as I progress. Ultimately the design was a really fun challenge for me and I'm digging the results (thanks to Seth Bro for his programming talents). The million dollar question with the site was whether or not it would truly be its own animal or be folded into JohnLoomis.com. It came down to personal preference and market hunch, and I decided that with where I'm at right now editorial and commercial just don't mix very well, even though the work is of course very similar. Though the sites are cross-linked, and I'm happy for anyone to see either, I want to direct these two separate groups (with two separate needs) to different places and images and promotion for the time being.

Upcoming plans for JLPFL include the first e-mail newsletter coming later this week which will then be followed up with a nice print mailer just after the new year. If you are interested in receiving the newsletter, just hop on by to JLPFL and subscribe.

Yeah, I saw the site a couple of days ago already. Congratulations for the launch of JLPFL. What a cool name... Originally I thought JLPFL stands for John Loomis PortFoLio. But John Loomis Photography FLorida makes sense of course. :-)

Really like the design; the clouds are so cool, and the colors are strong. After clicking "portfolio," however, I was a little confused initially about how to see more photos. Perhaps adding a little double-sided arrow in the slider would make things a little more intuitive...

i also like the cover page with the clouds//nice arrangement. Simple and straightforward to navigate i thought. Good job Mr. Loomis..

John, I actually agree with M. Scott Brauer. I too was confused about the photo navigation initially.

Thanks guys - I agree with the navigation issue as well, but its one of those cases where I also hope as a designer for people to be a little more intuitive. My belief is that you always want to help people approach and move through your site in seamless way, but each time you add one more tool or system (back/forward arrows, image click to advance, left half image click=back/right half=forwards, thumbnails, etc) you are cluttering the overall experience and presentation up and therefore potentially obscuring the photography as focal point. I'm not a professional designer and therefore I guess I'm allowed to care less about standards, but I appreciate the comments. I'd be happier if the nav bar just stuck a little less and remained a bit less obvious.
